Bellringer From yesterday’s notes…What are three ways to strengthen your personal statement?

To find the video on youtube: Search for “personal statements” and find the one with the blue screen from Purdue Univ. Online Writing Lab.

Agenda Bellringer Personal Statement - Writing Day

Personal Statement Prompt Handout Pay attention to criteria and deadlines! In-class participation grade today for staying on task! I will check in at the end of class.

Personal Statement Structure Reviewing examples from yesterday’s notes… Past, Present and Future! (Include them ALL in your statement, and connect them to you and your goals!)

Sample Outline 1(each pt a paragraph) I want to do X in my career. (future) A was the first time I learned about X. (past) B and C prepared me academically and practically for X. (past) I believe your opportunity will help me accomplish X because (present) While pursuing this opportunity, I hope to specialize in D. (present) (A, B and C could be the past events that you’ve written about in your pre-writing, etc.)

Sample Outline 2 I am applying to your program because of A, B, and C opportunities (present) While in your program, I would like to work with X, Y and Z faculty members. (present) I am prepared for this program because of D and F experiences. (past) This program will help me to reach my goal of Z. (future)

Sample Outline 3 My preparation for this opportunity includes A, B, and C. (past) I am applying to your specific program because of D, E and F. (present) This program will help me achieve my goal of Z. (future)

What are you being graded on TODAY? Rough Outline – sentence format like today’s examples (indicate past-present-future) Participation Grade – on task and productive! (losing points for electronics, excessive talking, etc.)
