Personal Statement Structure Reviewing examples from yesterday’s notes… Past, Present and Future! (Include them ALL in your statement, and connect them to you and your goals!)
Sample Outline 1(each pt a paragraph) I want to do X in my career. (future) A was the first time I learned about X. (past) B and C prepared me academically and practically for X. (past) I believe your opportunity will help me accomplish X because (present) While pursuing this opportunity, I hope to specialize in D. (present) (A, B and C could be the past events that you’ve written about in your pre-writing, etc.)
Sample Outline 2 I am applying to your program because of A, B, and C opportunities (present) While in your program, I would like to work with X, Y and Z faculty members. (present) I am prepared for this program because of D and F experiences. (past) This program will help me to reach my goal of Z. (future)
