Industry Focus Presentation Developing and Deploying Successful Wireless Handheld Enterprise Applications

The Challenge Everyone ‘KNOWS’ that wireless applications are of value to an organization and their mobile users Very few people actually know how to deliver this value or what this value even is THINK!

Defining Value With Wireless Applications Normally nothing new – just a better way to do it Value can be difficult to articulate But if you can’t articulate the value, then you are not going to be successful Wireless makes your handheld a true business tool – and it should be thought of as such

Mobile Wireless Users Don’t limit yourself to those who primarily work out of the office In the wireless world it doesn’t matter where you are!

What Types of Applications? First Something Simple –Intranet applications – expense reports, time, vacation, access to OD info –Third party applications – , PIM functions Then additional value applications –CRM –Sales Reporting / Ordering /Inventory –Time and Billing systems –Ticket systems – help desk, dispatch, etc.

Wireless Reality Lot of hype…. Limited Bandwidth, Limited Speed –Cost of increasing either is power and battery life, Coverage Many, many networks Airtime costs money Nothing is free in the wireless world

Key Success Factor - Coverage Define your coverage areas –Buildings –Locations –Users Home Coverage –International Define how the application works when out of coverage

Key Success Factor - Commitment Commit –Don’t pilot forever –Don’t worry about the latest –Don’t be fooled by new features –Focus on what is important and deliver on the value of the application

Key Success Factor – Control Control of your environment –Devices –Application –Usage

Key Success Factor - Security Your company’s data is priceless to your organization Engage your security people early in a project No matter how useful or cool your application is, if it doesn’t meet security requirements it will never go into production

Key Success Factor - Successful Development Phased Development –Phase 1 ONLY covers the current function –Phase 2+ adds additional functionality –Define this upfront and stick to it. The best wireless application is the one that uses wireless the LEAST Phased Deployment

Future??? Wireless networks continue to expand and improve Wireless development becomes cheaper and easier Carriers and Wireless Providers will adapt to catering to businesses International applications become more realistic J2ME prominence – more and more handhelds REALITY vs. HYPE
