The Thirteen Original Colonies AMERICA The Thirteen Original Colonies Connecticut New Jersey Delaware New York Georgia North Carolina Maryland South Carolina Massachusetts Pennsylvania New Hampshire Rhode Island Virginia The 13 Original Colonies came to America so they could have freedom to worship as they pleased. Freedom of religion was important to the people, especially the pilgrims who settled in Massachusetts and the Quakers who settled in Pennsylvania

Connecticut The state of Connecticut became a state in 1788. Connecticut was settled by the Puritans of Massachusetts Connecticut is nicknamed the Constitution State.

Delaware Delaware was the first state Delaware became a state in 1787 The 13 colony flag was first flown in Delaware during battle

Georgia Georgia was the last of the thirteen colonies to become a state. Georgia was founded in 1733 Georgia was named after King George II

Maryland Maryland became a state in 1788. Maryland was name after Queen Henrietta Maria of England Part of Maryland later became Washington D C

Massachusetts Massachusetts is the home of Plymouth Rock Massachusetts became a state in 1788. Massachusetts largest industry was Codfish

New Hampshire New Hampshire became a state in 1788. Both the French and English explored New Hampshire In 1776, New Hampshire declared it’s independence from Great Britain.

New Jersey New Jersey was explored by Sir Henry Hudson and was settled by the Dutch and Sweden New Jersey became a state in 1788. Over 100 battles were fought in New Jersey

New York New York got it’s name from the Duke of York New York became a state in 1788 Many European immigrants came into this country in New York

North Carolina North Carolina became a state in 1789 The first child born in America was born in North Carolina. Her name was Virginia Dare. She was the Granddaughter of John White. North Carolina is known for Roanoke Island’s Lost Colony

Pennsylvania Pennsylvania was named after William Penn. Pennsylvania became the 2nd state in 1787. Pennsylvania was settled by religious groups. They were known as inventors. They invented the Conestoga wagon.

Rhode Island Rhode Island was the first state to declare independence from England, but the last to become a state. Rhode Island was the smallest colony and state Rhode Island was populated by Native American before the Europeans arrived.

South Carolina South Carolina became a state in 1778 South Carolina is known as the Palmetto State South Carolina got it’s name from King Charles I Slaves were brought to South Carolina to work on the plantations

Virginia Four of the first five presidents were from Virginia Jamestown Virginia was the first permanent settlement in 1607 Here Captain John Smith saved the people by trading with the Indians. This is where He met Pocahontas.
