THE SOUTHERN COLONIES

SOUTH CAROLINA  South Carolina was discovered by the English colonists  The English colonists discovered South Carolina was 1663  English colonists went to South Carolina so they could grow cotton, cattle, rice, indigo, and tobacco  The Colony was named after Charles the 1 st of England  South Carolina was discovered on May 23, 1788

VIRGINIA  Virginia was found in 1607  John smith discovered Virginia  John smith discovered Virginia because of agriculture plantation they grew wheat, corn, and tobacco  John smith sailed through the Chesapeake bay to get to Powhatan bay  The Colony was named by Queen Elizabeth the 1 st

MARYLAND  The Colony was found in 1663  Lord Baltimore discovered Maryland  Lord Baltimore went to Maryland because of the manufacturing iron and ship building  April 28, 1788 was when lord Baltimore found the colony  Queen Henrietta Maria of England was the name that the colonists named Maryland

GEORGIA  Georgia was discovered in 1732  James Oglethorpe was who discovered Georgia  James Oglethorpe went to Georgia so they could grow indigo, sugar, rice  The colonists named Georgia after King George the 2 nd  Georgia became a state on January 2, 1788

NEW JERSEY  George Carteret found New Jersey  In 1664 George Carteret found New Jersey  He went there to make money  Isle of Jersey in England named New Jersey  New Jersey became a state on December 18, 1787
