Invasion of Normandy

Holocaust: Period in history when Jews and other minorities were discriminated, imprisoned, and killed. Concentration Camp: a place of confinement and persecution of prisoners (Jews)

By 1944, Germany controlled most of the countries in Europe. The Allies decided to invade the northern coast of France in an area called Normandy.

This invasion took a lot of planning because it involved huge amounts of equipment and soldiers. They decided to gather everything together in southern England and then cross the English Channel into France. Southern England English Channel France

On June 6, 1944, 60,000 American and Allied troops arrived onshore at Normandy and surprised the Germans. This operation was known as D-Day. It was the largest invasion by sea in history!

D-Day The Allied invasion of Normandy to get the Germans out of France.

The Allied troops came under heavy fire and thousands of soldiers were killed. The Allies eventually took over all five of the beaches where they had landed and headed inland. By August, Paris had been liberated! By September the Germans were completely out of France.
