2013 Science Showcase At Epps Island Elementary

Projects Choices 1.Scientific Experiment 2.Model 3.Invention

Scientific Experiment THE SCIENTIFIC PROCESS

Scientific Experiment Guidelines – Part 1 1.IDEA – Independently identified a QUESTION which was interesting to the student & which could be investigated. 2.EXPERIMENTAL HYPOTHESIS – Hypothesized relationship between the variables and the predicted results is clear and reasonable based on what has been studied. 3.DESCRIPTION OF PROCEDURE – Procedures were outlined in a step-by-step fashion that could be followed by anyone without additional explanations.

Scientific Experiment Guidelines – Part 2 4.DATA COLLECTION – Data was collected several times. It was summarized independently, in a way that clearly describes what was discovered. 5.CONCLUSION / SUMMARY – Student provided a detailed conclusion clearly based on the data and related to previous research findings and the hypothesis statements. 6.DISPLAY – Each element in the display had a function and clearly served to illustrate some aspect of the experiment. All items, graphs etc. were neatly and correctly labeled.

MODEL 3D Model Conceptual or To Scale

MODEL – Guidelines Part 1 1.DIAGRAM - Model includes a carefully drawn diagram. The diagram is labeled and can be used to better understand the model. 2.RESEARCH - Model includes a bibliography citing at least two research references used in planning the model. 3.SCIENCE CONCEPTS - Model clearly represents scientific concepts and is scientifically correct, having connections to real world applications.

MODEL – Guidelines Part 2 4.CONSTRUCTION - The model is carefully constructed. Well chosen materials are listed on presentation board and showcase the student's creativity. 5.PRESENTATION - Speaks clearly, makes eye contact, anticipates questions and takes ownership of the model. 6.DISPLAY - Presentation board is neat, accurate, easy to follow, and shows creativity.

Family Science Night The Experiments, Models & Inventions will be displayed in the Gym on Thursday, May 23 rd, Participants will have the opportunity to present their projects and answer any questions during the school day. Friends & Family can come that evening to Family Science Night to view all the projects & talk with our young scientists.
