TRACI Status Meeting Overview of the TRACI 100-W CO 2 cooling machine Bart Verlaat 22 September

TRACI: Transportable Refrigeration Apparatus for Co 2 Investigation. TRACI is a simplified concept of the 2PACL principle (LHCb/ Cryolab). To simplify the concept the internal heat exchanger function and the accumulator cooling function are integrated by cooling the accumulator with the pump outlet flow. The concept is called Integrated 2PACL (I-2PACL) As the simplified concept is new and could perhaps be interested for future small cooling plants it is patented on Friday September 9 th, 2011 (We can now freely talk about the concept ) 2

Just a passage from the patent…… 3 And like this 21 pages long……..

Integrated 2PACLTraditional 2PACL Simple control –1 heater with standard controller –Simple interlocking with conditioners and relays to guard pump sub cooling –Start-up procedure within interlock logic Single chiller loop Small size Large possible operating range (-40 to +25°C)* Complicated control (PLC) –Combined accumulator heating/cooling control –Sub cooled liquid protection 2 Chilling loops Large size Limited temperature range in standard configuration. * Depending on primary chiller used

Hydraulics Standard commercial chiller Gather gear-pump Swagelok piping (Including accumulator) Piping in a 2D clamp foam design 7

Electronics PR- conditioners switching relays –Interlock and start-up Calculation blocks for delta T and P Integrated Labview read-out 8

Traci goal: - 40 º C º C Bummer….. Cooling at room temperature works without BPR -40ºC not met. –More heatleak than expected –A loss of 5 ºC in the chiller (BPR?) 1.5x larger chiller possible in same mechanical envelope Larger heat leak does the dummy heaters to be unnecessary 9 © Tomasz Szwarc More test results presented by Tomasz

TRACI-2 Goal of the TRACI development: –Make a cheap and easy to build cooling system for series production: –Reduce cost and quantity of material –Redesign for outsource 10 Costs for 1 unit: Control:CHF 12, Hydraulics:CHF 16, Mechanics:CHF 3, ============ CHF 31, Possible savings: –Reduce electronics to micro-controllers? –Skip some functionalities in control –Make pump a fixed speed pump (no frequency control) –Simpler mechanics
