Subject/Predicate 1) Copy the following notes into your comp book. 2) Make sure to date each page of notes!

Subject of a sentence Subject: All sentences are about something or someone. The something or someone that the sentence is about is called the subject of the sentence. In the following sentences the subjects are shown in red. Note how the subject is often, but not always, the first thing in the sentence.

Subject examples- skip lines John often comes late to class. My friend and I have a dog named Spot. A tsunami devastated many parts of the Asian coastline in On Saturdays I never get up before 9 o'clock. Sitting in a tree at the bottom of the garden was a huge black bird with long blue tail feathers.

Subject Practice- highlight the subject of the sentence  The boy ate the apple.  I need help with this math problem.  Next week my grandmother is coming from Korea.  My favorite month is May.  Football is played in every country in the world.

Predicate of a sentence Predicate: The predicate contains information about the someone or something that is the subject. The example sentences on the next slide are shown again, this time with the predicate marked in green. Go back to your original sentences, and highlight the predicate a different color.
