Quick-write, ‘What is the Bering Strait Theory?’ The Bering Strait Theory is the scientific and archaeological explanation for the early settlement and population of the Americas. The early idea was that 12,000 years ago, during the Ice Age, the sea level connected Asia & N. America so hunters followed animals across. New evidence suggests that instead of 1 migration, they’re at least 4 migrations that reached the Americas.

The People of the USA & Canada North America’s first inhabitants were thought to have been ancestors of the Native Americans. These immigrants were thought to have crossed from Asia to North America using the Bering Strait. In recent centuries immigrants have come to North America for different reasons; political, educational, economic, or religious.

Modern Reasons to Immigrate ReligiousMany groups of people have arrived in North America to freely practice their religion like the Pilgrims did in A modern example would be Jewish immigrants who escaped Europe in the early 20 th century. EconomicMany immigrants arrive here, because in their homeland they do not have the economic opportunities to make a living. PoliticalMany immigrants arrived in the USA because they were trying to escape a civil war. Examples; Mexico (1910), Vietnam, & Laos (1970s), and Central America in the 1980s. Some immigrants try to escape a cruel government in search of freedom. Examples include escaping Chile or the Soviet Union in the 1980s. EducationalMany other immigrants wish for the opportunity to educate themselves or their families and they immigrate to either the United States and Canada.

Map Assignment  You are expected to work together in your groups.  Your goal is to create a political map of the USA  That has all of the states & their capitals labeled.  Shows all of the other nations which once owned parts of the USA.  Have your group choose different colors to coordinate each section of the country.  Make sure that you label each part, and add the years these states were added to our country.  Here’s an example on the next slide of what your finished project should look like…
