What is management to me?

How management affects people.

Katz modelKatz model Great manager/leader Human skills Technical skills Conceptual skills A great manager and leader has all these skills. It depends on the task they are doing that will decide what they will use to help manage. This matters because situations that are dealing with people are different. So you have to be more dynamic at choosing how to deal with people when troubles arise. The original model is good but in todays world we have to be a manager that can and will deal with change effectively. Edgington et al., pgs

Leader vs. managerLeader vs. manager What a manager is to me?  Rule maker  Bossy  Ridged  Unwilling to change ideas, and ways of performing tasks.  Trust issues What a leader is to me?  Inspirational  Great listener  Great example  Transformational  Equality Edgington et al., pgs 11-18, manager vs leader video.

The difference between great managers vs. bad managers Great  Gives of his time freely to help the team.  Knows that success comes when employees are happy.  Willing to change ways of performing tasks.  Helps to motivate team members.  Leads by example Bad  Doesn’t motivate others to perform at their best.  Forgets to thank others.  Delegates all tasks to others.  Doesn’t understand the business.  Belittles others while at work.

Situational leadershipSituational leadership Facilitating/counseling High R & Low T Shared decision making through two way communication. Leader only facilitates the process because followers have the ability and knowledge to do the task. Selling/coaching High T & High R Most of the direction provided by the leader but direction is provided through two way communication and emotional support. Followers psychologically buy into decisions that have to be made. Delegating Low R & Low T Let followers run their own show. The leader delegates because the followers are highly competent, willing, and motivated to direct their own behavior and outcomes. Telling/directing High T & Low R One-way communication where the leader defines the roles of followers and tells them what, how, when, and where various tasks should be performed. High Low High Low Relationship Task

Why are situations different?

Why is motivation important?  It provides managers with ways to help lift other workers to their full potential.  When managers have a motivating attitude, they make employees happy which in turn makes the employee successful and productive.  The organization runs smoother when they have happy workers.

My mission, vision, and goals for life.  Graduate college and find full time work.  Take what I have learned in college and apply it to life and work.  To be the best person I can be, and be an example to others.  To be happy and be successful in all I do.  Enjoy the small things.

Many thanks to you professor Matt Brownlee. You have made this a great semester. I have learned many great things about how to manage many aspects of my life.
