Professional Experiences for Preservice Teachers Supervised or Mentored?

Supervision Teachers are guided by experienced supervisors to fit the particular school environment.

Mentoring The relationship between someone of greater expertise in the school context (Teacher, Executive, Principal) with someone of lesser experience (Preservice Teacher).

Mentoring in the Educational Context Focused on assisting the Preservice Teacher to grow and learn as a professional. Focus also on the growth and development of the experienced Mentor.

What makes a good mentor? A patient listener Inspires trust Gives advice without dictating actions Encourages independence yet offers support Offers constructive criticism as well as compliments Open and honest Good role model through actions and words Willing to spend time and share

Preservice Teachers Asks questions Willing to be mentored Strives to give best Accepts constructive criticism Desire to try new things Accepts responsibilities Open and hones Respectful Listens, watches, learns and grows
