Bryce Davis Glen Henbest Martin Gilmore Anjul Maheshwari Matt Oster Vanderbilt University Department of Biomedical Engineering November 5, 1998 designsafe BME

What is designsafe ? l Software tool for analysis of potential hazards l Looks for solutions in design phase l Is currently not specific for biomedical engineering use

What are similar products? l Many consultants perform similar tasks l WHAM software is only known alternative –cheaper –not as user-friendly –not as complete

Customizing designsafe for BME l Items to consider: –potential users –potential tasks –potential hazards l Test new product –artificial knee –bowel segment resectioning –laser use in research

Analysis of Knee Replacement l Loss of limb function l Stress on knee l Slips, loss of balance l Blood-borne diseases

Analysis of Resection of a Segment of Bowel l Bacterial/Viral l Reactions to chemicals l Cutting/Severing l Loss of Function

Analysis of Laser Use in Research l Deviation from safe work practices l Burns l Optical Properties l Unexpected start-up

Conclusions l designsafe was customized for BME l Potential BME hazards were assessed l designsafe is indeed a powerful tool to aid in the design of BME devices

Acknowledgements l Bruce Main, President of designsafe l Dr. Paul King, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Vanderbilt University
