RUBE GOLDBERG By Sophia K. Hendren, 4 th Grade

RUBE GOLDBERG CARTOON INVENTIONS “Fish an Olive Out of a Long- Necked Bottle”

FACTS ABOUT RUBE GOLDBERG  Rube’s full name was Reuben Lucius Goldberg.  He was born on July 4, 1883, and was born in San Francisco.

WHAT WAS RUBE’S JOB, AND WHAT DID HE DO?  Rube’s job was a sculptor and an author. He was also a Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist.

RUBE GOLDBERG FACTS  Rube Goldberg didn’t make the machines.  He drew them and other people got inspired to make them from the pictures he drew.

RUBE’S FAMILY TREE  Rube’s parents, Max and Hanna Goldberg, were both German Jewish immigrants.  When Rube was in his teens, his mother died.  His father never re-married, and his father was a police and fire commissioner.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE CARTOONS HE MADE  “The Weekly Meeting of the Tuesday Women's Club”  “Lunatics I Have Met”  “The Candy Kid”  “Mike and Ike” (I like the name because it’s the name of a candy/jelly-bean)  “Boob McNutt”  “Lala Palooza”  “Foolish Questions”  “Sideshow”  “Father Was Right”  “I'm the Guy”  “They All Looked Good When They Were Far Away”

BOOKS RUBE GOLDBERG WROTE  Rube Goldberg wrote books too, and here are 3 of them: “Is there a Doctor in the house?” “Chain Reaction” And last but not least, “Foolish Questions!”

RUBE GOLDBERG’S JOB AND STUFF  Rube Goldberg was earning a salary of $1 million dollars by today’s standards.  Rube Goldberg was also a engineer.  Colleges have a contest about making real world Rube Goldberg creations.  There is no prize, but you get the bragging rights.

ALL ABOUT THE CONTEST FOR RUBE GOLDBERG  Schools from all over the world come and compete in the Rube Goldberg contest.  When they are coming to the competition and their project moves just the slightest bit, it could mess up the entire thing.  In last year’s event, one team’s project moved just the slightest bit and messed the whole thing up.  They spent a good 20 or 30 minutes to fix their project. When it was their turn, they didn’t know if they were to give their project a little push, or to just let it be.

MORE FACTS ABOUT THE RUBE GOLDBERG COMPETITION  The people that go to the competition say that it’s a pain to get their project in one piece.  The schools have to drive hundreds or thousands of miles to get to the competition.  In the competition, they have different subjects for the winners.  The machines they made were symbols of “Man’s capacity for exerting maximum effort to accomplish minimal results.”
