Greek Funerals and Burials The burial was of vital importance to honor the life of the deceased. The omission of the burial was seen as an insult of human dignity. The burial was divided into three separate parts: 1.Prothesis, which is the laying out of the body 2. Ekphora, which is the funeral procession 3. Then was the burial of the deceased, (the cremation of the remains.)

Greeks View on Afterlife The ancient Greeks had distinct methods of burial. Greeks were fascinated by the thought of the afterlife. They wanted the dead to be comfortable and for their spirits to survive. Death was also a time for the family to show off their wealth. Homeric belief shows that the Greeks saw death as a time when the psyche left the body to enter Hades. The burial rituals perhaps spawned from this belief that the soul must be guided into the afterlife. If the body was not given a proper burial according to Greek ritual, the soul would remain trapped between the worlds of the living and the underworld.

Greek Festivals Ancient Greek festivals were major religious events that recurred annually, every two years, or every four years. The festivals of Athens are best known, and they were plentiful: Athens set aside at least 60 days a year for annual festivals.
