Problem Solving with BEDMAS

Example Bryan is a member of a fishing club. To use the site, the cost is 10$ per day plus 4$ per fish caught. If Bryan catches 5 fish one day, what is the total amount he must pay? Show the chain of operations.

Solution Understand: How much money does Bryan have to pay for his 5 fish. If its 10$ a day for the site and 4$ per fish. Plan: 1 day multiplied by 10$ added to 5 fish multiplied by 4$ (1x10)+(4x5) Solve: 10+20 =30$ It will cost 30$ for the 5 fish that day.

Example A certain small factory employs 98 workers. Of these, 10 receive a wage of $150 per day and the rest receive $85.50 per day. To the management, a week is equal to 6 working days. How much does the factory pay out for each week?

Solution Understand: How much does the factory pay its employees each week (6 days). Knowing that wages are 150$ per day for 10 workers and 85.50$ a day for the rest. Plan: 10 x150 $ 98-10= the rest of the workers The rest x85.50$ The answer times 6 days

Solution continued Solve: {(10x150)+(98-10) x85.50} x6 54 144$ They pay 54 144$ per week to their employees

Example If the same factory has supplies expenses of $1135.78 a day in addition to the wages above and makes $60,128.72 in a week, what is the factory’s total profit or loss in one week?

Solutions Understand: What are the profits or losses in a week. Knowing that it costs. 54 144$ a week for employees ,and 1135.78$ per day in supplies.

Solution continued Plan: 1135.78 times 6 days. Add that to the cost for employees 54 144$ Subtract that from 60 128.72$ Solve: 60128.72$-[(1135.78 x6) +54144] 60128.78-[6814.68+54 144] 60128.78-60958.68 -829.90$
