LET’S WALK THROUGH SOME IMPORTANT FACTS RELATED TO OREGON’S RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA LAWS.

YOU CAN POSSESS AND USE RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA IF YOU ARE 21 AND OLDER. IF YOU ARE YOUNGER, IT’S ILLEGAL. If you’re 21 and older, you can also grow up to four plants on your property, possess up to eight ounces of usable marijuana (dried marijuana flowers or leaves that are ready to smoke) in your home and carry up to one ounce in public. Recreational marijuana cannot be used in public, however. Fact #1

YOU CAN USE RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA AT HOME OR ON PRIVATE PROPERTY. PUBLIC USE IS ILLEGAL. A good rule of thumb: If someone outside of your home can see you, you’re probably in public. Fact #2

YOU CAN POSSESS UP TO 8 OUNCES OF USABLE MARIJUANA IN YOUR HOME AND 1 OUNCE OF USABLE MARIJUANA OUTSIDE THE HOME. Usable marijuana means dried marijuana flowers or leaves that are ready to smoke. Fact #3

YOU CAN GROW UP TO 4 PLANTS PER RESIDENCE, OUT OF PUBLIC VIEW. You can grow up to 4 marijuana plants per residence, regardless of how many people live in the residence. For example, two adults in one residence may still only have 4 plants. Fact #4

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF MARIJUANA REMAINS ILLEGAL. PLEASE BE RESPONSIBLE. Driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII) refers to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated or drugged, including impairment from the use of marijuana. Fact #5

APPROVED MEDICAL DISPENSARIES MAY SELL SMALL AMOUNTS OF MARIJUANA TO RECREATIONAL USERS OF LEGAL AGE. Adults 21 and older can share or give away recreational marijuana, receive it as a gift, grow their own (4 plants per residence), or purchase it from approved medical dispensaries. Licensed retail stores are likely to open in late Fact #6

YOU CAN’T TAKE MARIJUANA IN OR OUT OF THE STATE. THAT INCLUDES WASHINGTON. You can’t buy marijuana in another state or take it from Oregon across state lines. Crossing state lines with recreational marijuana is a federal offense. Fact #7

YOU CAN MAKE EDIBLE PRODUCTS AT HOME OR RECEIVE THEM A GIFTS, BUT YOU CAN ONLY USE THEM ON PRIVATE PROPERTY. The OLCC will take the necessary time to get the availability of edibles and extracts right. They will eventually be available at retail outlets licensed by the OLCC, but probably not at the same time that the stores are expected to open (likely sometime in 2016). Fact #8
