September 2016 Year 10, Year 11...and beyond Controlling your future Mrs K Sorrell Deputy Headteacher

Planning Ahead… “70% of the jobs existing in 2024 haven’t yet been invented” Your sons could still be working in careers in 2067 Comparison people working today could have made choices in January 1962

 Key Stage 4 (GCSEs…) leads to St Ignatius College Sixth Form or job-based training (cannot be ‘education leaver’ at 16 : Government guidance)  19+ University/college or job-based training leads to The rest of your life! National qualifications Level 4: University Degrees, HNDs… Level 3: A-levels, Level 3 BTECs… Level 2: GCSE higher grades, Level 2 BTECs… Level 1: GCSE lower grades, Level 1 BTECs… Entry Level: working below Level 1 The next stages…

Courses available at St Ignatius College GCSE Applied : e.g. BTEC Cambridge Nationals

Your Core Curriculum at St Ignatius College GCSE Mathematics GCSE English (Language and Literature) GCSE Science GCSE Religious Studies Citizenship (non-exam) Physical Education (non-exam)

What is the English Baccalaureate? It is essentially a message from Government on the desirability of as many students as possible studying the following subjects up to GCSE : - Mathematics - English - Science (at least 2 GCSEs) - Foreign Language - History or Geography

Your choices You can pick 3 other courses There are 15 to choose from....so lots of choice! We will try to make it possible for you to do your ‘first choices’....BUT we cannot guarantee it for everyone. So, you will be asked to pick some reserves (just in case)

How do I decide what courses I should choose? Some questions to consider… Do I perform well in exams? Do I like to be ‘doing’ practical things? Do I like to be creative? Do I like discussing and debating ideas? Do I like to know about what’s going on in the world? Do I like project-style work? Do I like work which is relevant to real jobs? Do I like courses where I’ll work on ICT? Do I want to use foreign languages in the future?

When choosing your subjects… Talk to your tutor and your teachers What will you be good at? What style of course will suit you? What will you enjoy? Talk to Mrs Orr and make a careers appointment Talk to your family

Think ahead, think 6 th form! Choosing to study A levels opens the door to more opportunities. Every year, many thousands of students with 'AS' and 'A' Levels win places at good universities worldwide. They are the most recognised qualifications around the world, they are accepted as proof of academic ability for entry to universities.

Did you know? The following employers will recruit graduates from any degree subject? Microsoft Tesco HSBC Google Barclays Aldi BBC Civil Service Price Waterhouse Coopers Goldman Sachs

We will do our best to meet all requests But please be aware that we cannot give a guarantee of doing so. Each class needs viable numbers.....but also has a maximum capacity. Deadline – Tuesday 12 th January
