The Diary of a Young Girl

 Born in Germany in  When the NAZIS came to power in Germany, Otto Frank moved family to Holland.  Germany occupied Holland in  Her father took his family to a “Secret Annex” in the Office in which he worked.

 Non-Fiction is written about real events, people, and places.  There are a variety of types: Articles, Biographies, Diaries/Memoirs, Informational Readings (Maps, Directions, Instructions, etc.), etc.  Although it is based on fact, the reader cannot (necessarily) accept everything in non-fiction as fact.  Judge facts for yourself.

 A Diary is a book used as a personal record of events, experiences, and observations.  A Diary is (typically) non-fiction.  Diary is addressed to “Kitty”.

 Ann Frank’s diary begins on her 13th birthday and ends a little over two years later.  It records events she experiences, hears, observes, and feels during her and her family’s hideout from the Nazis in WWII.  After the war, her diary was found and published.  Originally written in Dutch, it was edited and published in 1947.

 “Anti-Jewish” racism.  For centuries in Europe, Jewish business people have been resented and stereotyped as greedy and dishonest.  Jews were considered outsiders and largely made scapegoats.  This treatment has persisted for centuries, as Jews were killed or exiled.

 Following Germany’s defeat in WWI, Jews were again made a scapegoat.  Adolf Hitler, and the National Socialist Party (NAZI), used Anti-Semitism to gain popular support.  The NAZIs claimed that the Aryans (Germans) were a “Master Race” deserving to rule over all others.  Social Darwinism

 In groups of 2-4 students, complete and present one of the follow to demonstrate your understanding of Anne Frank’s diary:  Path 1: Performance.  Path 2: Reflection.  Path 3: Connection.  Path 4: Research.  All four paths must be presented to the class by the group and include a visual aid to help the audience better understand your presentation.  You may chose any medium for your visual aid.

 In Path 1, your group must choose three scenes/diary entries that you feel best illustrate Anne’s personality/character and reenact them for the class.  The performance must be between 5-10 minutes for the three scenes.  Introduce each scene and what it shows about Anne.  You may alter some of the dialogue and fictionalize some of the actions of the characters for dramatic purposes.

 In path 2, your group will discuss amongst themselves what they learned from reading The Dairy of a Young Girl and share it with the class in a presentation.  Consider: what you learned about Anne, World War II, the Holocaust, Humanity, Adolescence, Family, Love, Courage, etc.  Presentations must go into depth about what was learned and be between 4-6 minutes.

 In path 3, your group will discuss amongst themselves the connections between Anne’s diary and themselves.  Consider: Anne’s hopes, dreams, fears, struggles and successes, and your own.  Presentations must go into depth regarding the connections and be between 4-6 minutes.

 Research and inform the class about one of the following:  Miep Gies  Otto Frank  The Secret Annexe  Anne’s Dairy  Other Holocaust survivors or rescuers.  Presentations must be between 4-6 minutes and include a works cited of at least two sources (other than the Diary) to be given to the teacher.

 1. Write a 1-page alternate ending to The Diary of a Young Girl.  2. Draw/color a “graphic novel” version of one scene from The Diary of a Young Girl.  3. Create a 10-line found poem from the Diary.  4. Write a 1-page fictional interview between yourself and Anne Frank.  5. Explain (in ½ a page) how learning about Anne’s life has changed your life or perspective of the world.  6. Draw/color an original book cover to The Diary of a Young Girl.
