12/09/2008 Iron mining in breakfast cereal Today you will use your listening, reading, writing, speaking and hands on science skills for your lab. Your completed report = 20 points
In teams of three, you will each be responsible for working on the lab and writing a lab procedure with a: »Problem Statement »Hypothesis »Materials List »Procedure »Observations and Data »Conclusion / Questions
Problem statement Is there …………………………
Hypothesis Answer your question
Materials list Plastic cup Cereal sample Plastic mesh (keep it dry) Wood block (crushing) PVC roller (pulverizing, fine crushing) Magnet (_____ is attracted to magnets) Warm water (1/2 container, to make a slurry)
Procedure Grind, pulverize the cereal on the screen Mix the powdered cereal with a ½ filled container of warm water and stir it with the plastic roller. Hold the magnet on the outside of the container and swirl it around. Slide the magnet above the liquid to look for iron (very small particles) Collect the Fe on your finger and wipe it on a lsbeled spot on your lab sheet.
Record observations of the cereal before, during and after the lab? Use all of your senses except taste. –Smells –Textures –Sounds –shapes Circle a small spot on your lab sheet and label it Fe. Observations / Data
Conclusion Write 2 new things you learned while doing the lab. Write 3 questions you thought of during this lab. Study the cereal box label and make a list of the elements names that you can also find on your periodic table. There should be several.
