Writing across both Key Stages What you can do at home to help…..

Writing is about more than words on the page. It is about posture, pen/pencil grip…

Have you created the right environment ?

Writing opportunities come in many forms.. Messages to santa, instructions, menus, directions, labels, diary, postcards,…..

Actual writing – dos and don’ts! Praise every effort Provide pens, pencils, felt tips, anything! Ask your child to read it to you for meaning. If spellings are incorrect – don’t criticise, correct together. Provide paper, in lots of different form. Model writing as often as possible.

Progression within writing…. Children begin by writing individual letters Cvc words such as cat, sat, sit, pin…. Short sentences… Small paragraphs that are a stream of consciousness… More structured sentences that tell a story or sequence of events… Thought behind actual choice of words used, events described… Desire to write to entertain the reader…. THE MOST SUCCESSFUL WRITING IS WHEN THERE IS AN AUDIENCE
