Origins of Halloween Ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain 2000 years ago. Market end of harvest season and they believed this day a bridge to the dead was formed. Used to stand for “All Hollow's Eve”. People would leave out food and wine on their doorsteps to please the roaming spirits to make sure they wouldn’t come inside. Whenever one would leave the house they would dress as a fellow ghoul or ghost to try to fool the ghosts roaming the streets that they were one of them.
