Jack O’Lantern Hundreds of years ago Stingin Jack was an old drunk who liked to trike everyone. Once he triked the Devil. The Devil climbed up to a tree and Jack made him promise not take his soul when he died. The Devil promised him because he couldn’t get off the tree. Many years later Jack died. He can’t go to the Heaven because he had been a miserable man so he went to the Hell. But the Devil kept his promised and Jack couldn’t be there. Jack didn’t have a place to be. He asked to the Devil how could he leave the Hell because there wasn’t any light. The Devil gave him an ember and Jack put it in a hollowed turnip (the turnip was his faurite food). Since these day Jack is in the earth without a place to be and he use his hollowed turnip like a lantern to illuminate his way.

Jack O’Lantern In Halloween the Irish put a light in hollowed potatoes, turnips, beets… to ward off evil spirits and keep away Jack. In1800 the Irish went to America and they saw that pumpkins were bigger and easier to hollow them so today we use the pumpkins like Jack used the hollowed turnip.
