The Renaissance Coach Williamson August 31, 2009 Ramsey Junior High

Renaissance “rebirth” 1350 to 1550 a time in history when there was a rebirth of interest in art and learning.

Black Death This plague made Italians more secular. Their interest in the world increase because the wanted to make it a better place.

Secular People were more interested in the worldly things than in religion and getting to heaven.

Why Italy? Center of Roman Empire : This reminded the Italians of their past. Cities were very rich: they had money to pay painters, sculptors, etc for art. There were many small city-states: They could compete with each other.

Name one reason why the Renaissance began in Italy

City-States Florence, Venice, Geona, Milan, Rome Urban/Country Hire people to fight battles because of wealth( Mercenary: soldier for hire) Located on the Mediterranean Sea Spain/France west, Byzantine/Ottoman East, and North Africa to the west

Geography not only reason The crusades brought Italian merchants in contact with Arab merchants Mongols encouraged trade and protected the Silk Road

Florence Trading cloth, especially wool Banking: they began lending money and charging interest Florin: the gold coin of Florence to measure the value of other money. Medici: Family that owned the bank, they owned banks as far away as London.

The Rise of Venice The wealthiest city-state of them all. Shipbuilders and sailors They cut canals and used boats to move Gondolas: a type of long boat

Marco Polo Merchant from Venice 1270’s took a journey to china to meet Kublai Khan. (Ruler of Mogal empire) Polo meet Khan and Khan liked him and sent him all over china. Polo wrote a book about his travels and people loved it.

How did people travel in Venice?

Government Republics: a government controlled by its citizens Venice: Doge, eventually lost power to nobles Florence: Lorenzo de’Medici ( the magnificent) Many of renaissance artist owed their work to him.
