Handwriting Information Session for Parents

Why is handwriting important? Progression in handwriting and the National Curriculum School approach and scheme Main issues that may arise How you can help!

Why is Handwriting important? -more motivation to write -Children who have better handwriting are usually better at spelling -Helps children understand the importance of structure and organisation.

Essential Points! -Pencil grip -Correct Equipment -Posture when writing -Correct letter formation -Space and environment

Left Handers -Can be harder for left handed writers to write neatly. -Left handers need to sit of the left side of the desk -Tend to write lower down so may kneel on chair – cushion or lower desk can help -Left handers need a longer stem to write with

Pen Licence -Scheme for Year 3,4,5 -Children to have consistent handwriting in all books. -Writing must be consistent in size. -Joined writing -Ascenders and decenders correct length.

Potential Difficulties with Handwriting and Advice

Legibility? (All or most of the words written can't be read out of context.) Neatness? (The handwriting is messy or poorly controlled.) Comfort? (The child is experiencing pain, strain or discomfort when writing.) Pressure? (S/he is pressing too hard or not hard enough, or pressure within one piece of writing is variable.) Speed? (S/he writes very slowly, producing too little writing, or too fast, becoming inaccurate.) Motivation/enjoyment? (S/he is reluctant to write or gives up too easily.) What are the main areas of concern?
