ETHAN PARSONS IRA Part III

Title: Catch 22 Author: Joseph Keller Genre: Historical Fiction Published: 1961

Plot Catch 22 by Joseph Keller is about an American air core pilot by the name of captain Yossarian. Yossarian is convinced that everyone is out to get him and desperately wants to return home however Colonel Cathart keeps raising the number of required missions in order to complete a tour and go home.

Point of View Catch 22 is told from the first person perspective of captain Yossarian explaining everything he sees the way he sees it and explaining all of his thoughts.

Conflicts Cathart keeps raising the mission number. Chief White Halfoat Dies of Pneumonia. Dobbs and Nately Crashed. Yossarian Refuses to fly.

Main Characters Captain Yossarian – Indirect characterization – “But Yossarian couldn’t be happy, even Though the Texan didn’t want him to be, because outside the hospital there was still nothing funny going on.” Doc Daneeka – Direct characterization - “Doc Daneeka was Yossarians friend and would do just about nothing in his power to help him. Chaplain Tappman Colonel Cathart

Irony The only literary device that I noticed in Catch-22 was irony and was what the book was named after, Catch-22: the only way to be grounded from flying is to be declared insane by asking not to fly anymore combat missions however it also means that if you ask to be grounded, like it requires, then you are not really insane.

Like/Dislike LikeDislike Its Not action packed.Boring at certain points. It mostly dialogue in conversations. Somewhat hard to follow. Interesting twists and surprises enough to keep my attention but not over loaded.

Recommend to… Anyone looking for a good book but doesn’t mind having to go back to understand it on occasion. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone that enjoys historical fiction.
