So, Then, How Do We Get Them There? Identifying the Instructional Moves That Support Skill Development

Purpose of this Session Participants will be able to… Identify instructional moves that help teach specific standards. 2

Analysis of Our Instructional Practices

Try This! Read the instructional practices everyone submitted for homework. Put sticky notes by those that support acquisition of the writing standard from session 1. On each sticky note, rank the practice from 1-3: 1 = Supports acquisition of this skill 2 = Strongly supports acquisition of this skill 3 = Teaches students this skill 4

Talk About It As a table, discuss the practices you analyzed in your table groups. The goal: to come to consensus on the top 5 practices for teaching or supporting acquisition of this skill. 5

Instructional Planning Analysis

Try This Read the sample text excerpt. Annotate this text according to the following two questions:  How could you use this text to help students learn to read more effectively?  How could you use this text to help students learn to write more effectively? Read Silently: 10 minutes 7

Try This Read the two lesson plan excerpts in your materials packet. Annotate the lessons, using the following focusing questions to guide your annotation:  How does the first lesson approach reading instruction? Paraphrase the directions to the teacher.  How does the second lesson approach writing instruction? Paraphrase the directions to the teacher. 8

Model-Current Practice Comparison

Talk About It: 4 “A”s Protocol Identify a facilitator for your group. Using the 4 “A”s Protocol, discuss each question for 3 minutes:  Agreement: What practices are consistent with what you (or teachers at your site) already do?  Alignment: With which practices do you (or teachers you serve) need to improve your alignment?  Argue: Which practices would you argue with or challenge?  Action: Which practices will you act on and how? 10

Reflection and Closing

Talk About It What three practices from this session would do the most to move writing instruction in the area you serve? From whom could you/other teachers learn in your area (school, district, BOCES)? 12
