Empowering

How would you respond? At a traffic signal the child asks, “Why are STOP signals red in colour”

How would you respond? 1."I need more time to play". 2."She did it to hurt me" 3."Girls are stupid" 4."…....so I hit him back" 5."I hate milk”. 6."Why don't we see rainbows daily?" 7."Why do I have to brush everyday"?

What do you think? Why are summers hot and winters cold? Write down your thoughts in your note book Using two balls explain the above

1a What is the capital of Arunachal Pradesh? 1b Given a globe in which state capital will the sun rise first in India? Is this Thinking?

What is more important? Knowing Facts Tasks & Procedures Right Answers Memorization  Teacher Teaching Thinking Create Understand & Analyse Decision Make Problem Solve Estimate & Predict  Student Learning

Traditional Pitfalls  Glorify Facts  Do Thinking for them  Confirm to my thinking  Stop too soon

Where is the FUN in learning?

Convince them or confuse them

Why?  Excuse or explanation  Looking at past  Negative/ Blaming  Questions ability/ intentions ? How?  Possibilities  Focus on future  Positive/ Solution finding  assumes ability/ instills positive intentions

Thinking 1. Ask questions, not answer them 2. Ask Why? for information 3. Ask How? for solutions 4.Ask open questions ……. 5.Ask for understanding, not correctness 6.Ask only for thinking, not for interrogating

# 1 Teach Tool ? ASK OPEN EXPLORE Don’t expect an answer

Good news role play Think of any recent situation connected to your child, which was bad news for you. In pairs, do a role play, one can be the child and the other the parent Now roll the dice and re-do the role play.

Good news or Bad news ?

Your child is being bullied in the school Your child is stealing things from school / friends house Your child is found cheating in school test You catch your child watching pornography on internet Your child is bullying others in playground

Good news or Bad news ? Every problem is actually an Opportunity to learn

Need your help Imagine, that you are going on a holiday cruise. On the way, the Captain makes an announcement, he says “the ship is about to SINK' Amidst the panic you bump into the captain. He says, “I need your HELP?” Please do a 2min speech in the audio system - to pacify all these panicking people, to calm them down.

Child who was scared to cross the road

Be my consultant

What do you say or do?

Why do you praise ? n Does any 10 months old child looks for praise ? n We have taught them - why we have taught them? n I do something to get praise. I try to live up to the praise. I AM BECOMIMG DEPENEDENT n So what you want - INNER SELF or …… n If you do not praise will sun stop rising or flower will stop blooming in the jungle ? n Say WOW for natural expression not to make your child feel better or ENCOURAGE – what say ?

Acceptance Self Motivation Self Assessment I Learn I Understand I Explore Sufficiency Lead 1. Comparison 2. Encouragemen t 3. Praise 4. We know 5. Right / Wrong 6. We Decide 7. Deficiency 8. Control / Manage Locus of Control Inside Outside

 “Finish the whole bowl” (whether you are hungry or not).  “Go to sleep” (whether you are sleepy or not).  “Say hello to Uncle” (whether you like uncle or not).  “Stop playing at once” (whether you want to play or not).  “Share you toys with your new friends” (whether you want to or not).  “Complete the homework” (whether it makes sense or not)  “Stop crying at once” (whether you feel terrible or not) Who is in control?

You are NOT in control of yourself. I am.

 “I will explain this to you” (you cannot figure it out yourself)  “Use this to make you feel better” (you need not think or your ideas are not worth it).  “Give this to me – you are too small to do this” (the result is more important than your attempts)  “Now stop crying. I will help you find your pencil box” (you are not capable of managng your emotions or your things)  “No, no that’s not right. Here I will tell you why that happens” (I know the correct answer) Who decides; Who thinks?

What YOU feel and think is not as important as what I think. What I think is something that you need to follow; What I think is correct.

 “Show me your work” (I need to approve it).  “This is nice” (I decide what is nice).  “Show me again” (Only when I am satisfied it is done).  “This is important for you” (I decide the value of something).  “Eating with hands is not good manners” (I know what is good and what is bad).  “I am proud of you” (It is important that I be rpoud of you)  “You are so impatient” (I declare the kind of person you are) Who is the Judge?

You need to be appraised, aseessed, judged, and even praised by me. Look for my approval - that is the path to learning and happiness
