Next week: Ready for class, part 2 Your team will lose a point if ONE member of the team doesn’t have a notebook on his/her desk. Make sure to bring your notebooks and have them out at the beginning of class!

Let’s review last week’s lesson!

What does “to hang out” mean? To hang out = to spend time with friends

Word of the day Puberty The time in your life between being a child and being grown up. Can be very difficult because you want to be independent, but you still live with your parents and go to school.

Let’s look at some things that make growing up difficult

Fighting with your parents

Chores Many teenagers fight with their parents about doing chores. Chores = work you need to do at your house For example: Washing dishes, taking out the trash, cleaning your room

David’s growing pains

Answer these questions! Why is David’s mom angry with him? Why doesn’t David want to do the dishes? How long will it be until David can listen to music again? What can David do to make his mother less angry at him?

Peer pressure

Let’s break down this phrase! Peer = a person like you A peer is someone who is your age and comes from a similar place. Pressure = 压力 When a friend or classmate tries to make you do something you don’t want to, it’s called peer pressure.

Peer pressure Verb: to put pressure on someone For example: He is putting pressure on her to smoke. They are putting pressure on her to drink beer.

David’s growing pains

Paul’s letter Later, David tells his big brother Paul about what happened. Paul writes him a letter of advice. Listen and answer these questions: What does Paul think about David’s decision not to smoke? According to Paul, why did David’s friend get angry? What should David tell his friend? What’s the most important thing?

Depression

Depression = a feeling of deep sadness Many teenagers feel depressed. People with depression may find it hard to get up in the morning. They also find it hard to get excited about anything.
