The French and Indian War led to A.N.G.E.R.

A. Appalachian Mountains: barrier to settlers  After war, Britain passed the Proclamation of 1763  Prohibited settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains  Unpopular (and largely ignored) in the American colonies

N. New taxes: Stamp Act  British want Americans to pay for protection  Pass Stamp Act (tax on anything made of paper)  Americans furious: “Taxation without Representation”  Resistance throughout colonies (Sons of Liberty)

G. Get Townshend and Quartering Acts  Townshend Act: taxed imports such as glass, paper, and tea  Quartering Act: Americans forced to house British troops (“Redcoats”)  Americans further outraged

E. English try Americans in Britain  Anyone evading taxes could be sent to Britain for trial  Right to trial by jury of peers in jeopardy

R. Revolution talked about  Leaders like George Washington and Samuel Adams spoke about revolution  South Carolinian Christopher Gadsden: “There ought to be no New England man, no New Yorkers…but all of us Americans!”
