Why this project should be implemented at our school…

Fourth of fifth grade students – studying ecosystems and the features of Earth. In both of these grades the learning of the six major biomes is part of the Michigan Curriculum Frameworks document. Science/Strand V/Content Standard 1/Elementary Benchmark 1 Describe major features of the Earth’s surface.

The learner will go beyond what has been read in the text to discover exactly where each biome is located. Re-visit their distinctive features (plants, animals, etc.) and again have fun!! See more real-world pictures and footage of each biome. They will then be able to test their knowledge with immediate feedback on the six biomes.

The instructional strategies Deductive (Rule-Eg) as the students are given information then asked to demonstrate knowledge. Inductive (Eg-Rule) as they are directed to seek information and present with creativity what they’ve taken in.

The entire presentation will include several slides of the following… Informational pages with fun pictures, sounds, video, and choices. Interactive quizzes on each of the five major biomes: aquatic, desert, forests, tundra, and grasslands. Closure – students will open Paint and draw themselves within their favorite biomes. Virtual Field Trips on each biomes will be available as links.
