Testing for Rusty Conditions You are going to test what conditions are needed for rust, and if some are worse than others. You will need 5 test tubes, 5 nails, 5 orange rubber bungs and a test tube rack. 1.Add a nail to each test tube, along with the contents needed (example – damp cotton wool). 2.You need to fill in the conditions column of your results table along with your prediction. Do you think it will rust or do you think it won’t rust. Make sure the nail is submerged into the content of the test tube. Write your name on a piece of paper, and leave your nails at the back of the room.

Lets make Magnesium React 1.Now…You will need a Bunsen Burner, Safety Goggle and a pair of Tongs. 2.When carrying out this experiment. Your Bunsen will need to be on a ROARING flame (Blue flame). 3.Hold the Magnesium strip at the end with the pair of tongs. 4.In the flame, you should see a smaller lighter blue flame. Hold the Magnesium at the top of the small flame, UNTIL it glows orange. 5.Remove from the flame and DON’T LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE MAGNESIUM 6.IT WILL BURN VERY BRIGHT AND WILL HURT YOUR EYES. Observations 1.What does the Magnesium look like when it is reacting? 2.What is the Magnesium reacting with? The flame or Oxygen? 3.Draw a diagram of the equipment you have used, and how you are carrying out the experiment.
