In the beginning… Started with the beta version of Microsoft Virtual Server – Free (Woohoo!) Purchased ESX Server – Better central management tools – HA/DRS – Better performance – Bigger market share

Now…

Not all servers can be virtualized… Servers with physical add-on cards – USB hardware can be accommodated High throughput servers – VMware makes them wimpy

Non-server use… Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) – Used for remote desktop access (branch offices, etc) – Deployed 10 desktops 5 on Wyse terminals running XP embedded 5 on Dell Optiplex Flex computers – Problems? Poor streaming video performance, Flash content – web surfing is better on local OS

Future goals for VMware… Re-Enable HA/DRS Migration from Fiber Channel over to iSCSI Implement VMware Update Manager Alternate datacenter for DR Better backups More VDI Implementation
