Herne Hill Shared Space Developing a Transport Vision In 2014, 4 students from City University undertook a Pedestrian Review using industry standard methods (PERS) of the Herne Hill Town Centre as part of their MSc work. Their review observed: –The road underpass scored particularly badly The pedestrian crossing facilities are not favourable Pavements are narrow Fast moving traffic presents danger The look-and-feel is poor –Movement around the area in particular connecting Half Moon Lane via the underpass is not well served with informal shortcuts observed –There is too much clutter (bins, road signs) around the space –Lighting is inadequate –All areas lack adequate seating, bicycle racks and public conveniences The project highlighted areas suggested further exploration to help tackle the problems: 1.Slowing traffic can decrease congestion yet increase flow 2.Safety – speed limits, footpath widths 3.Social – seating, maps, re-arranged bike racks, rain shelters, pedestrian flow 4.Environment – Noise/air pollution, sustainability One solution sketched out to solve the above was ‘shared space’

Traffic approaching centre is corralled in lanes for ~50m approaching a GATEWAY GATEWAY emphasising to drivers entry to the shared space Courtesy crossings emphasise pedestrian movement around the shared space. Pavements are widened to improve pedestrian movement and also create space for additional seating Inc. entertainment space Without traffic lights - pedestrians take more direct routes around the town centre - vehicles can move in all directions guided by changes in surface and roundels, e.g. from Half Moon Lane Milkwood Road - vehicles travel more slowly but congestion can be reduced - pedestrians get around faster Herne Hill Shared Space Scheme

Phased development It may be possible to implement the scheme in 3 distinct phases 1.Milkwood Rd. + Herne Hill 2.Half Moon Lane 3.Dulwich Road + Norwood Rd.
