Writing to Explain L.O. To understand how to write to explain.

Writing triplets Persuade, Argue, Advise Analyse, Review, Comment Inform, Explain, Describe Imagine, Explore, Entertain

Writing to Explain When you explain, you don't just write information – you give reasons. Advise = What? When? Who? Where? Explain = What? When? Who? Where? How? Why?

Writing to Explain To start with, you need to fill the kettle with cold water, otherwise it can boil dry. You should make sure you don’t go over the ‘maximum’ line, so that the kettle doesn’t boil over and burn you. Whilst the kettle boils, add one tea bag to each cup, as well as any sugar that you want. Explain how to make a cup of tea:

Consider how to answer a writing to explain question: Although writing to explain does not require the interesting imagery of writing to describe, it is not a boring set of facts like writing to inform.

Consider how to answer a writing to explain question: On my first day at school I felt nervous. The Millennium Dome is large. The sea looked clear. On my first day at school I felt nervous. The Millennium Dome is large. The sea looked clear. For example, consider the sentences below. Yes, they are explanatory, but they are also dull. How could we improve the sentences?

Explain what is happening. Practising how to explain. You cannot use the following words: Balloon Blowing-up Boy

Explain what is happening. Practising how to explain. You cannot use the following words: Arms Trousers Triangle

If you could choose, where would you most like to live? Explain the reasons for your choice in an article for your school paper. Plan 1.Where would you like to live? 2.What’s does it look like there? 3.What is there to do there? 4.Why else do you want to live there? 5.What are the downsides? 6.Where else would you like to live? Plan 1.Where would you like to live? 2.What’s does it look like there? 3.What is there to do there? 4.Why else do you want to live there? 5.What are the downsides? 6.Where else would you like to live?

Self Assessment Complete the detailed checklist on the next slide. Using a different-coloured pen, improve three of your sentences.
