OVERVIEW & SCOPE OF WORK SUMMARY Current Status: FLITECAM is complete & stable. From 8 runs at Lick Observatory we have 3 papers published in the Astrophysical Journal and many conference papers. Two PhD were awarded for work involving FLITECAM Remaining Tasks (FY2009): Purchase six additional filters and make final installation Order placed, filters expected end of January 2009 Understand changes to MCCS and update as required – hire software support May need a funding supplement to hire a software engineer early 2009 Understand Instrument Conformity – submit full package by mid-2009 Update ICP as required – mid-2009

QA Issues and Mitigations Interface to MCS (minor) We completed the software interfaces as outlined below under the previous USRA plan but will need to make changes as required to accommodate the new MCS –Tier 1: Basic Connectivity completed –Tier 2: Mission Data Handling completed –Tier 3: Command Handling completed –Tier 4: Observing Scenarios – FLITECAM code complete, tested against MCS until stopped We need to learn about the new MCCS and establish new interfaces and tests. The scope of this task is unclear at present. However, to accomplish any changes we will need to re-hire a FLITECAM software engineer with considerable experience. –There is money in our FY2009 budget for re-hiring our previous programmer part-time (~50% max), but this may not be adequate. –Also, there is no guarantee that we can get her back! We recommend that we increment our budget for FY2009 (by $50k to $200K in total) and seek to hire a new full-time employee that can work now and throughout commissioning.

FLITECAM Documentation Status Master Data List complete – documents on web site & FLITECAM Cabinet FAA Component Maintenance Manual complete All drawings up to date – FLITECAM document storage cabinet & web site Draft Integration & Commissioning Plan complete Software Documentation is complete and up to date FLITECAM Engineer is George Brims (with project since inception)

FLITECAM MILESTONES Next major event is the new filter installation. Then, integration with new MCCS build.

CONCLUSIONS Work for 2009:  Install new filters  Complete software interface to MCS – hire software engineer  Create final version of ICP  Submit materials for conformity review/approval Constraints: Due to delays in the SOFIA Project my staff have had to move on to other projects. No personnel are available at UCLA for conformity activities until April 2009 at earliest.  Senior UCLA Engineer George Brims remains on this project (17%) Budget = $150k for FY09 (1 st installment = $22.5k, just arrived) Includes a part-time programmer (50%) Suggest a budget supplement of $50k to make this full-time
