Marking/Second Marking & Feedback Dr Robert Hamilton AD(T) Loughborough University
Marking/Second Marking
Marking (EE Comments) Poor coursework marking High marks being awarded Overly harsh or inconsistent marking
Second Marking (EE’s Comments) Awarding identical marks No evidence of moderation How has the marking been reconciled? Disagreement over marks resolved through 3 rd marking
Definition of Second Marking 3 Different terms: -Internal Moderation -Double/Second Marking -Blind Double/Second Marking
Internal Moderation i.e. a sample of scripts is scrutinised by a second internal examiner to check that the assessment criteria have been applied consistently (and where applicable that the marking scheme has been followed) and the outcomes of the assessment are fair and reliable. The sample should include examples of scripts from across the mark range and borderline cases. e.g. examination scripts (and coursework worth 50% or more) should be subject to internal moderation:
Double/Second Marking i.e. every piece of work is independently assessed by more than one internal examiner. Each marker keeps a record of all marks awarded, together with his/her rationale for awarding each mark. In this case, second markers have sight of the first marker's marks and/or comments. The two markers subsequently confer to arrive at a set of agreed marks and the discussion/agreement is recorded. e.g. ALL final year projects and dissertations should be subject to at least double/second marking (i.e. in some cases BLIND double/second marking would be more appropriate).
