What is the sole purpose of marriage given?

The sole purpose of marriage is to have children and raise them to become a loyal member of the party.

Why is love discouraged in marriage by the party?

To isolate and dehumanize the people of Oceania.

 Julia and Winston are talking about when they will be caught.  What their future will hold.  They said the party can only make you “say” not “feel”  “ they can’t get inside you” (166)  Winston was thinking about what the Ministry of Love is capable of.

Solitude : the state or situation of being alone. Why would the author choose this word? This word indicates that one of mans biggest fear is isolation. Without contact and relationships, we are dehumanized.

The Ministry of Love is the exact opposite of what love really is. Love: An intense feeling of deep affection Ministry of Love: Uses torture, fear, and isolation to manipulate people into “loving” big brother

The Ministry of Love is use to eliminate love between two people and enforce the love between the people and Big Brother.

It is possible to dehumanize man by taking away what makes man human.

O’Brien tries to cure Winston by dehumanizing him and brainwashing him into “loving” Big Brother.

“Never again will you be capable of ordinary human feeling. Everything will be dead inside you. Never again will you be capable of love, or friendship, or joy of living, or laughter, or curiosity, or courage, or integrity. You will be hollow. We shall squeeze you empty, and then we shall fill you with ourselves.” (256)

George Orwell reminds his readers what man is capable of. He reminds them that if they give their government to much power, their government can take everything away from them, even the things that make man human.
