Some Leadership Quotes Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others. - Jack Welch, retired CEO of GE Don't tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results. - General George S. Patton A leader is a dealer in hope. - Napoleon Bonaparte Reason and judgment are the qualities of a leader. – Tacitus The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self- restraint to keep from meddling with them while they do it. - Theodore Roosevelt Only one man in a thousand is a leader of men -- the other 999 follow women. - Groucho Marx

LEADERSHIP THOUGHT STARTERS Good leaders share common traits 1.Competence 2.Confidence 3.Character 4.A keen understanding of human nature

BOSS VS. LEADER Although your position as a manager, supervisor, lead, etc. gives you the authority to accomplish certain tasks and objectives in the organization (called Assigned Leadership), this power does not make you a leader, it simply makes you a boss. Leadership differs in that it makes the followers want to achieve high goals (called Emergent Leadership), rather than simply ordering people around. Thus, you get Assigned Leadership by your position and you display Emergent Leadership by influencing people to do great things.

THE FOCUS OF MGT 450 We will be reading about and studying great leaders throughout history, but the take-aways from this course will focus on what makes great business leaders.
