The Attributes of God Hosea 5:4 “…they do not know the Lord.” Israel no longer knew God- they had forgotten Who and What He was! Psalm 90:1-2

What’s an Attribute and Why should I care? An attribute is a property intrinsic to its subject and by which it is distinguished or identified. The attributes of God are those qualities that make Him God. We are made in His image, Gen.1:26. But the fullness of these characteristics are only found in Him!

Limitations to Our Understanding of God’s Attributes: We can perceive some things about God by mere observation, Rom.1: But we certainly cannot fathom all there is to know about Him, Rom.11: We are thus limited in our knowledge to what He chooses to tell us! 1Cor.2:4-16

The Basics of Our Understanding of God’s Attributes: We usually reflect on the “3 O’s”: 1. Omnipresence, Psalm 139:7-12 God, through His knowledge and influence, is everywhere. 2. Omniscience, Job 28:23-28 He knows everything He chooses to know, Gen.11:5; 18:20-21; 22: Omnipotence, Rev.1:8; Acts 17:24ff. He is “Almighty God”!

But in addition to the O’s, there are other important attributes we need to consider- like God’s: Unity, Deut.6:4-7 Pantheism equates “God” with the forces of nature; or, seeks to worship “all gods” of all peoples indifferently. Infinity, 1Kings 8:27 He is without limit of the external determinations of time, power, or space.

And His: Eternal Nature, Gen.21:33 He is free from the succession of time. This does not mean that time is unreal to Him, just that He sees the successiveness of events past, present, and future with equal vividness, Psalm 90:4; 2Pet.3:8. Immutability, Mal.3:6; James 1:17-18 He is unchanging and unchangeable.

As well as His: Sovereignty, 1Tim.6:15 God is the one and only Supreme Ruler of the Universe- He’s the only one with the credentials! Simplicity, John 4:24 Don’t misunderstand- we cannot comprehend the complexity of God. But He makes it simple for us…1John 4:7ff.

Now, Do you know God? As the old saying goes…. “to know Him, is to love Him.” How do we love Him? “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” John 14:15
