What Are Kinetic and Potential Energy? Miss. Matern

What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work. Moving objects have energy. Objects that are still have energy.

Potential Energy Potential energy is stored energy Raising an object against the force of gravity give the object potential energy.

Kinetic Energy Energy of a moving object is kinetic energy. As kinetic energy increases, the potential energy decreases.

Example Stretch a rubber band and do not let go, the stretch demonstrates potential energy. Let go of the rubber aiming it toward a wall and it is converted to kinetic energy.

Wherever there is potential energy, kinetic energy can be made to emerge. Energy makes change possible. We use it to do things for us. It moves cars along the road and boats over the water. It bakes a cake in the oven and keeps ice frozen in the freezer. It plays our favorite songs on the radio and lights our homes.
