Identification of Program Needs Boys Sports – Football, Basketball, Cross Country, Track Girls Sports – Volleyball, Basketball, Cross Country, Track A needs analysis reveals that 3 of the 4 boys and girl sports are considered “Power” sports. Development of the Boys and Girls athletic programs should reflect these needs. I have coached every boys and girls sport here at Shackelford Jr. High

Program Objectives Improve Core Strength and Power Increase Lean Body Mass* Increase Speed and Agility Train in the Correct Energy System Maintain Strength and Power gains during the season Decrease the chance for injuries

So how did we come up with this program? NSCA Fly Solo Program The Fly Solo Camp is designed for high school sport coaches to gain a better understanding of strength and conditioning principles to include in their programs. Is this safe for our kids? Youth Resistance Training: Position Statement Paper from the NSCA

Characteristics of Outstanding Players Power Change of direction Acceleration Speed

Four Step Philosophy Testing Evaluation Setting Goals Program Design

Testing - Why do we test? Measure initial performance levels Create a baseline of data in case of injury Learn strengths and weaknesses To show improvement To measure the effectiveness of the program Motivation

The Athletic Index

Evaluation Objectives Determine strengths and weaknesses for an individual Determine improvement of the team or class from test period to test period and from year to year. Evaluate the effectiveness of the strength and conditioning program

The Individual Profile The index scores from one test period alone don’t tell the entire story. A history of each athlete’s testing is kept. This allows the coach to evaluate the type of progress the athlete is making from one year to the next. The athlete will show the most progress in the first year of training. Each succeeding year less progress is made as he/she nears his/her athletic potential. The key is to show progress in the areas in which the athlete has weakness.

Goal Setting Establishing goals is an essential element of life AND any sports conditioning program. Athletes will make more progress if they know beforehand what they are trying to achieve. We strive to set goals that are challenging yet realistic. We compare data with past testing results. The athletes have the most input when setting goals. The role of the coach is not to let them set goals that are too high or too low.

Program Design A progressive and methodical application of overload in an athlete’s program over time provides the stimulus and the needed recovery to produce the best results
