Performance Enhancement – Goal Setting By Chace Kay

Description:  Goals are an object of the athletes ambition and are the desired result of the athlete and where they want their performance level to be at in order for success. Goals are essential in performance enhancement as they measure and track your performance and give the individual or group motivation and a specific target to aim for.  Your set goals must be: SMART (Specific, Measurable, Assignable, Realistic, Timely) - Specific: The specificity of your goals determines which area of performance you want to improve and to which extent you will want your performance to improve. - Measureable: The measurability of your goals refers to you being able to track your progress of them through quantity, statistics or any other indication which represents the extent of the a - Assignable: The assignability of the goals will refer to who will achieve these goals. Whether they are team, group, or individual goals will be able to indicate who can achieve the set goals. - Realistic: The realism of your goals will refer to how valid the goal setting is, and ensure that the results wanted can actually be achieved. Realistic goals still need to be challenging. - Timely The timeliness of your goals outlines the time to be allocated into achieving these goals and will ensure that adequate time is given to accomplish these goals.

How it will improve performance Goal setting works to improve performance by giving the individual or group of individuals a set target on where they want their performance to be, it is essential for the participants to have a clear view of what is expected of them allowing them to specify their efforts in a specific direction. Goal setting increases many aspects of the individuals’ behaviour and performance including motivation, awareness and overall understanding. If an individual has an idea of what they are supposed to do/ achieve efficacy and will to do so, thereby improving their performance and desire to succeed. It has been scientifically proven that 90% of individuals who set goals have higher levels of success than those who don’t. - Edwin A. Locke’s research in 1981.

Elite Athlete Explanantion Michael Phelps explains goal setting and how it improves performance.
