Presentation transcript:

Early Years update Georgia Pritchard- Early Years Adviser

30 hours free childcare for working parents Initially DfE requested provisions to register interest in becoming early implementers Now the DfE will only be accepting applications submitted by local authorities Southwark will not be submitting a borough wide proposal to be part of the pilot

Nicky Morgan: Parents get ‘right to request’ schools open for full working day BBC news website Proposal that families of children in thousands of schools would be given the “right to request” that their school “provides childcare for a full working day, before and after school and during the school holidays”. School will be required to ‘take reasonable steps’ to make sure this is provided

Early years experts call for retained statutory status for EYFSP Foundation years website 4Children has responded to the consultation, noting how if proposals to introduce a baseline assessment are to succeed they must: Use the baseline to build on existing two year old checks to truly inform early identification for the pupil premium Ensure that any baseline assessment is in sympathy with a child starting school Balance between a baseline assessment and the profile of a child’s learning over time.

Summer-born children 'to get the right to start school later‘ Gov.uk website Schools Minister Nick Gibb announced the government’s intention to give summer-born children the right to start in reception at the age of 5 The minister said admissions rules must be changed so children born between 1 st April and 31 st August cannot be forced to go straight into year 1 if they wait to start school until they turn 5 A consultation will now be carried out and the reforms approved by Parliament

Two year old provision in schools Schools no longer have to register separately with Ofsted The ‘School Organisation’ guidance has been amended so that schools can lower their age range by up to two years without having to go through a statutory process. Provisional date for LA training Thursday 28 th January
