Types of Reactions. There are so many different reactions that happen inside and outside the human body that chemists have tried to organize them into.
Which is which???.  Synthesis—when two or more different reactants combine to form one product  Example ◦ 2Mg + O 2  2MgO  Decomposition—when one.

TYPES OF REACTIONS

SYNTHESIS Synthesis A + B  AB Reactants: 2 elements or 2 compounds (usually molecular) Products: One compound Example: 2Mg + O 2  2MgO

Decomposition Decomposition AB  A + B Reactants: one compound Products: two elements or compounds Example: 2HgO  2Hg + O 2

SINGLE-REPLACEMENT Single-Replacement A + BC  AC + B Reactants: an element and a compound Products: a different element and a new compound Example: 2K + 2H 2 O  2KOH + H 2

DOUBLE-REPLACEMENT Double-Replacement A+B- + C+D-  AD + BC Reactants: 2 ionic compounds Products: 2 new compounds Example: K 2 CO 3 + BaCl 2  2KCl + BaCO 3

COMBUSTION Combustion Reactants: Oxygen and a compound with carbon and hydrogen Products: ALWAYS CO 2 + H 2 O Example: CH 4 + 2O 2  CO 2 + 2H 2 O
