 Students will plan the prewriting stage of the writing process by completing a graphic organizer.

 Student will develop a draft of a Diamante poem by using their graphic organizers.

Shape of a diamond Poems do not have to rhyme Each line used a specific type of words 7 lines One topic or two opposite topics Topics that met in the middle Used nouns, adjectives and -ing verbs

 Line 1: Noun – The topic or theme of the poem  Line 2: 2 Adjectives- describes the noun in line 1  Line 3: 3 verbs that describes the noun in line 1 (action verbs –ing)  Line 4: 4 Nouns- two nouns related to line 1, 2 related to line 7

 Line 5: 3 verbs (action verbs -ing) that describes line 7  Line 6: 2 adjectives that describe the noun in line 7  Line 7: 1 noun- antonym (opposite) from the noun in line 1

 Nouns  Person, place or thing  Adjectives  Words that describe or modify a noun or pronoun  Verbs  Shows action  State of being  Antonyms (opposite)

 First stage of the writing process  Take up the most time  Begin the think and organize ideas for writing  Do not worry about spelling, focus on words for the poem

Things that we need to think about:  Chose a topic for your poem  Select the Audience  Chose the function or purpose  Graphic Organizer

 Form: Diamante Poem  Topic: The student will select their own topic  Audience: Who are you writing to? Teacher and classmates  Purpose: Why are you writing? The entertain

 Organize thoughts and ideas about our topic before we begin to write.  adjectives, verbs and nouns

 Focus on the content of the poem  not on grammatical errors  Draft poem by using graphic organizer used in the prewriting stage.

 Look at the prewriting graphic organizer.  Select the words that you want to use from the prewriting graphic organizer.  Put the words in the corresponding locations.

 Complete a graphic organizer as a 4 th grade class  collaboration activity  We will chose a topic (2 opposing topics)  I will write the class words on a graphic organizer on the SMARTBoard or on the overhead.

 Now it is your turn  You will complete our own diamante poem by completed a graphic organizer.  You can select your own topics.

 The 4 th grade class will complete a diamante poem.  Look at the words from the prewriting graphic organizer and choose words to use in the draft.  Then, write the chosen words in the blanks to form a class poem.

 Now it is your turn  Complete your own draft by looking at your prewriting graphic organizer.

 As a whole class, review the revision marks.  Choose a draft to revise.  Then as a whole class, revise the draft together.  I will use the ELMO to do this activity.

 We will revise their own drafts using the appropriate proofreaders marks.
