The Gunpowder Plot

In 1605 King James 1 was the King of England. Not everybody in England liked him.

A man called Guy Fawkes decided to blow up* the Houses of Parliament with the King inside. *Blow up: faire exploser

Guy Fawkes and his friends planned to use gunpowder* to blow up underneath the King’s chair. *gunpowder: poudre

They put 36 barrels of gunpowder in the basement of the Houses of Parliament on November 5 th.

The guards found the barrels. They arrested Guy Fawkes and his friends for trying to kill the King.

Every year on November 5 th people in Great Britain and many other countries remember the gunpowder plot. They have fireworks outside.

Children use old clothes to make a Guy, and people give them money to buy firecrackers. In the evening they make a bonfire to burn the Guy.
