I.Competition for West Africa 1. After slave trade was abolished, Euro. nations sought the source of African goods. 2. Euro. nations met resistance from native peoples. a. Ex.—Samory Touré led the people of Senegal against the French. b. Liberia was only independent nation left in western Africa.

II. Competition for Central and East Africa 1. Henry Stanley of the New York Times fueled interest in Africa by his writings. a. Stanley was able to interest Leopold II of Belgium in developing the area. b. Leopold II used slave labor to take the Congo’s vast rubber supply.
