Guiding Principles for 2015 Enlarging the STEM pipeline is a national security issue requiring a Manhattan Project style solution. Utilize every strategy to widen the STEM pipeline, from systemic change to one student at a time. Vigorously Promote Win-Win Relationships – (e.g., getting college students to teach in elementary schools) Need to have institutions create more seamless collaboration (e.g. dual credits, majors, etc.) to avoid “poaching” students

Group Recommendations Create Congressional Joint Task Force to implement change in STEM pipeline –use existing research and knowledge –curriculum, pedagogy, professional development for teachers and counselors, role of school administration –tie into existing national and regional professional organizations for academic groups –best practices that can be scaled and implemented –includes reps from business, education, professional organizations--“best minds” to develop policy recommendations –address recruitment and retention of student in STEM programs

Group Recommendations Launch education/PR campaign to change attitudes and perceptions of STEM among students, parents, and other relevant groups –Develop key messages about benefits of math, science –Elevate message about STEM’s role in supporting economic and national security –Show the connections for science and math; integration messages –Highlight careers once a semester for students; involve industry –Use media to make the case –Identify champions and/or role models

Group Recommendations Develop national network –Identify advocates (industry, student alum, etc.) from every state to reach back into schools and show connections for studying STEM and career development –Promote continued benefit coops, jobshadowing, apprenticeships, etc. –Offer major specific scholarships requiring program completion

Group Recommendations Support Non-Traditional Student Channels for STEM –Identify existing programs helping to encourage non-traditional students, including women and minorities –Community Colleges, alternative h.s., WF development programs, etc.
