Why STEM? We live in a time of great opportunity. The spirit of innovation can help us overcome challenges and ensure a prosperous and secure future. To seize this opportunity, we must position ourselves at the cutting edge of scientific discovery and technological innovation. Yet our country is falling behind in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This is why many professionals and educators in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics believe the United States should do more now than ever to encourage students to enter STEM-related fields. These experts say our young people need strong STEM skills to compete in the world market. We must work together to cultivate the next generation of critical thinkers and innovators.

What Do You Want To Do For A Living? STEM Careers (2:35)

STEM at Akimel A-al We are going to do creative problem solving – engineering. You will be given a problem, and then you are going to research, design, build, and test a solution to that problem.

Engineering Design Process Define the Problem Do Background Research Specify Requirements Brainstorm Solutions Choose the Best Solution Do Development Work Build a Prototype Test and Redesign

Your Research & Design Problems

Two-Liter Bottle Rockets Problem #1: Research, design, build, and launch a rocket that uses a two liter bottle and air pressure that will fly high, straight, and return the ‘astronaut’ (a raw egg) to the ground safely.

Fender Bender Physics Problem #2: Research, design, build, and test a car that when rolled down and ramp and into a wall protects the passenger (a raw egg) from injury.
