KEYBOARDING Technology Foundations

WHY IS KEYBOARDING IMPORTANT?

LEARNING KEYBOARDING 1. Keyboarding is the foundation of everything you will learn in Technology Foundations 2. Good Keyboarding Techniques are crucial when learning to keyboard 3. You will learn 2 new keys a day 4. Remember when learning the keyboard: 1. No regard to formatting (don’t worry about errors) 2. Emphasis toward speed while using correct finger placement 3. Finally focus on accuracy (correctness) when all keys are learned 5. Learn the applications for which the keyboard is used; for example: letter writing and spacing once after periods at the end of sentences, spacing once after commas, etc. 6. Keyboarding is like learning to play a sport or a musical instrument; it takes practice to be successful at this skill

Gross words a minute (GWAM )  Total words divided by total minutes keyed Correct words a minute (CWAM)  Subtract number of errors from total number of words and divide by minutes keyed KEYBOARDING TERMINOLOGY

1. Keyboard at edge of desk/table 2. Feet flat on floor 3. Sit up straight 4. Body aligned with the “B” key 5. Fingers curved and upright over home row keys 6. Wrists low but not touching the frame of the keyboard or the desk/table 7. Copy/Textbook on the right side of the monitor 8. Eyes on the copy/monitor 9. Key with the appropriate fingers 10. Sharp, fluent stroking  Proper technique forms the foundation for successful touch keyboarding. DEVELOP PROPER KEYBOARDING TECHNIQUES

TECHNIQUE IMPROPER TYPING TECHNIQUE

Why do we have techniques for computer work? If you don’t practice proper techniques then your…..  spine slumps  shoulders hunch forward  head cocks back  wrists bend up and lean on the desk or wrist rest This is a prescription for pain in the neck, shoulders, back, wrists and hands TECHNIQUE

What does Proper Techniques look like? If you are performing proper techniques then your…..  spine is properly aligned, with the ears over the shoulders and hips  chair's backrest supports the hollow of the back  wrists are located above the wrist rest and there is no strain  hands are on home row keys

TECHNIQUE Your wrists should be straight as shown below:

TECHNIQUE Correct / Incorrect foot placement Which one do you think is demonstrating the proper technique?
